IKEA: A new obsession
There’s been a lot of things I’ve become intensely focused on and then lost interest in over time. A new interest has arisen and it is not movie trivia. It is more subtle and common than that: IKEA!
I have finally given in as any sane college student on a budget. Well, any sane college student on a budget who still can’t afford IKEA. IKEA is really cheap for the average person, but I can hardly afford a $300 sofa. I’m either going to start saving up (instantly) or incessantly be on Craigslist like grease on a fat lady’s pan.
I’ve even got to the point where I want to “create” from the as-is part of IKEA stores. Why do kitchen tables have to be in the kitchen? They’re cheaper than real desks and are probably more practical for spreading out papers. Same for certain occasional tables like the one from the Malm. I totally get horizontal space on one axis — I don’t need a desk with 60 inches of length, I want width to hold my computer, printer, stacks of paper, pictures, and other blahblah stuff in one straight line.
But I can’t afford a $200 bed. Only my parents have real money! It’s times like these when I realize none of my stuff actually belongs to me. At least not most of it. Part of it has to do with the fact that my parents bought me all the stuff that I need, as well as the other stuff that we both know no one would ever (EVER) need. The other reason is because I haven’t used money for anything but books and food since freshman year. It gets isolated here in my college bubble.
IKEA brings hope with its cerulean blue and highlighter yellow. I used to confuse it with Best Buy because of the color combo. Never again…
I am even categorizing this under IKEA as it obviously has its own category (in volumes!)

Hang in there you will graduate eventually.
Oh, I posted pictures of the beach.
Oh. Yeah. I’m looking forward to that. but that’s where the trouble begins. I’m planning on further education because I am just that masochistic. And enlightened.
My husband & I met in grad school. We have been married a little over 9 years. 3 masters later (2 his & 1 mine), he is now ABD. We are just a year or so away from being done. It is hard sometimes.
Oh, Day 4 is up & working on Day 5
Hi,
I like the way you write about Money, Finances and bank ..Its really different and interesting … keep the momentum going ..I hope this will really going to help me in future while making investments.
They who are of the opinion that Money will do everything, may very well be suspected to do everything for Money….
brilliant. .

Hi Debt,
Thanks! I’m not really thinking of it was an investment per se but a way to not spend a lot of money and things I do not need. I’m okay as long as i have a desk, chair and bed. A random table would make things easier too. But other than that, I’m not into a lot of clutter with furniture.
I hope your own financial ventures are going well
I haven’t quite reached the bigger pond to begin doing markets and large purchases. I’m still a kid I guess!
One of the few stores I could spend an entire day in haha, so much to look at and so much to do.
It is amazing how much support comes from the parents at school. That always reminds me how badly I need a job
good for you for thinking outside the box too
I use my old textbooks as a table now, most expensive furniture I own lol
Hi Sweetie,
Listen…. Craigslist is the way to go!!!!!! I furnished my entire house off there for pennies!!!! You can even buy IKEA stuff from there… best part… already assembled!
I hate the IKEA experience to be honest. I hate being hearded like cattle. But then Im old…lol
DeeZone — What is ABD? Academia!

Your real name. cool. I would probably use my old textbooks as a table if I only knew how. I like to spread my stuff out. Preferably on a 4 x 6 flat area. Minimum…
Amberfireinus — I’m starting to love Craigslist as well. The plain, non-eye hurty, no ads layout makes me even more in love.
I’ve only been to IKEA 2 or 3 times (many years before). I didn’t have a shepherd those times so maybe we just entered the store without a guide! I don’t like being herded either; hopefully that will not be the case for me (again).
Paperdreamer,
ABD — All But Dissertation on his PhD
lol yes somehow my screen name got switched to it?
A nice big desk is a must I think too, I have that for school work, cpu and other things. The books I use are for the bedside table to hold my ancient alarm clock and light.
I wasn’t wowed by Ikea myself.
Decent design for the prices, but I don’t love the quality.
But marketing works… This coming from the guy with all of the Apple product.
Well…wowed isn’t what I am. But I have a budget and dammit I am sticking to it this time. I really am.
Really.
I know what you’re saying…. sometime I switch from Kraft Mac & Cheese to Prince.
Yikes!
